The cars from that era have always been my all time favs. My Dad was friends with James Hamm and If I recall didn't he drive the orange blossom special at some point ?
Does anyone else get chills when you see the old photos that show the roller coaster off of turn 4 ?
We had a cassette tape from the radio stations coverage of a race in Daytona he ran in that I used to listen to when I was really young. Maybe prior to 72 or so. I'll have to see if we can dig that out.
I think if the Old School Racing guys could have worked out a deal to have those types of bodies used for it's series that would have been what would make the series a hit.

My Dad was friends with James Hamm and If I recall didn't he drive the orange blossom special at some point ? Why, yes he did. Here is the car at Daytona. We need a ruling from the mods. Is it ok to post photos, or do we need to post links like Donnie does?

Calhoun - Thanks to Donnie's link I found your video collection on Youtube.....What memories ! I was at most of those races and wish now I had been born 20 years or more earlier......
Tony Formosa had told me that Norm and Russ had made a video of the history of the track and I've been wanting to borrow it. Tony has a treasure chest of old programs, photos, etc from the last 40 something years of the track. If we can save the place we really need to get all of this stuff together and build an archive on site so that more people can see why we're all so passionate about the history.
Thanks again for your post and videos, They are truly priceless.

Jerry Lawley, practicing for the 1973 Southern 400. Jerry competed at the Fairgrounds from 1961 until his final race here, the first Marty Robbins 500 in 1977. He had 8 wins, with probably his biggest win coming in the 1973 Union 76 200. He started 12th and charged through the field to beat Sam Ard, Neil Bonnett, Alton Jones, and LD Ottinger.

Billy, you're up again. Do you know what year? And any details on the car? Was this car out of Wayne's shop? Thanks for all the details on the other photos and cars. It sure helps to get it straight from the source!

Actually that was Dad's own car, before he and Wayne Day had started racing together. I called Dad and ask, and he thinks it was around 1976. He said that was probably his first Nashville car... Check out those leaf Springs..haha. Man how things have changed since then.

Is that 88 car a late model. That car is tough. I think the track should make us run some of them old bodys. Criswell I know could make them. It would be so cool to run a 70 nova or a 68 Chevelle. Hint Hint Maybe you will see one next year. If I could find one Im in.

ammodog If my memory is right, Lawley drove for Lewis Carden who built the cars for P.B. that chubby drove at that time. I think at one time Lawley did drive P.B. backup car as did so many others.
