Bob Reuther. The first track champion. Bob, Jimmy Griggs, and Charlie Griffin in the Hart Hastings #14 won every race in 1958. I'm guessing this photo was made before the season started. One reason is the radiator looks brand new. The second is that Marty Robbins' name has not yet been painted on the door. Bob has told me the sign painter might take a week or two to letter a car. He'd stop by the shop and paint a little, then come back in a few days and paint some more. A long way from vinyl wrap.

Lots of talent in this photo. Thirteen of the best to ever sit in a Modified Special. The one glaring omission is Jimmy Griggs. From left to right: Jack Marlin, Eddie Mitchell, Malcolm Brady, John Thoni, Charles Stofel, Bob Reuther, Bobby Celsor, P.B. Crowell, Marvin Caylor, Charlie Parrish, L.J. Hampton, Bill Morton, and Coo Coo Marlin.

The Marlin brothers lead the field off of turn 4 as Coo Coo tries to get by Jack on the inside as Jimmy Griggs follows. This is how it looked from the stands during a Sunday race on the half mile track during the 1961 season.

Here is the perfect picture if you need to explain "push" and "loose" to someone. Malcolm Brady on the outside and Dean Jennings on the inside. And check out that hood ornament on the 71! Photo from the Malcolm Brady collection.

As you all know, safety innovations come about from learning what went wrong during crashes. Malcolm Brady flipped this car in 1958, the first year of weekly racing at the Fairgrounds. The roof was caved in so far it pinned his hands to the steering wheel. They had to pry the roof off the steering wheel to free his hands. Other than some skinned knuckles, he had no other injuries. Pretty amazing. They changed the rules on roll bar construction after this one.
